Environment Law/ESG and Human Rights

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) mandates the top 1,000 listed companies to submit a Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) annually, which covers their ESG activities. We advise clients on fulfilling corporate ESG commitments. We assist clients in adopting sustainable practices and responsible business conduct towards energy use, waste management, pollution treatment, natural resource conservation and treatment of animals.

The firm represents clients before the National Green Tribunal on cases involving environmental degradation and environment compensation. We have rendered advisory services on rules, regulations, government policy and caselaw in respect of forests, pollution, noise, air and water laws.

The firm has handled cases before various Indian courts involving discrimination arising from race, colour, gender, religion, etc. and related Right to Information actions/procedures, writ petitions, representations to the authorities, enforcement of basic human rights including the entrenched Article 25 right to freedom of religion as also challenges to abuse of powers by the State etc.

In 2024, we supported a challenge to land acquisition involving a road that was cut through a moderately dense forest land in the Aravalli hills on the southern side of New Delhi so as to protect a natural lake and its drainage through 100-year-old man-made containment and sluice gates. The firm has promoted and pursued an India Project relating to arrears of cases pending in Indian courts (approximately 50 million cases) and appropriate mechanism for the same to be decided with the participation of the International Bar Association in this regard.
